PROJECT
Writing & illustrating & creating a custom display typeface for a young adult graphic novel
In the first half of 2021, I wrote and illustrated a book called WWIII.
It was a part of my graduation project. The idea was to create an experimental publication.
The novella is set in the city of Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, millions of years in the future. It has
full-page illustrations that accompany the text.

STORY OF WWIII
GENRE
Pre-teens, Teens &
Young-Adults
TG
The story of this book is about a young cheetah called Gulaab and her quest.
It's regarding following your dreams and figuring out what to do with the weight of them. It's about family and sisterhood and trees. It's a book that hopes to bend genres by establishing its own take on writing, illustration and art.
Speculative Fiction,
Sci-Fi, YA

WORDS OF WWIII
SEAWEED

The body text of WWIII exhibited Baskerville, a transitional serif typeface.
For the titles of the chapters, I needed a quirky display typeface. I was really inspired by the floating forms of seaweeds and so taking them as my muse, I designed a typeface that would fit the needs of the story of WWIII.
Display typeface, available in three weights.

SPREADS OF WWIII
INSPIRATIONS

The prose is fantastical, atmospheric and has elements of other-worldliness. The writing style should be cohesive with the illustration style. So I took the liberty to create quirky, experimental, vivid illustrations & also added elements of traditional art into them.
Rajasthani Architecture
+ Art Nouveau + Flowers
+ Natural World

The book was written and created in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, which also happens to be the city in which the story is set. So I let the characters of Rajasthani architecture, culture, textiles and art inform the style of the illustration.
Jaisalmer, January 2021
